The department has a particularly strong research concentration in this area, with one of the largest polymer engineering groups in North America and internationally. Our research expertise spans the entire range of polymer science and engineering, from polymer reaction chemistry and engineering, to chemical modification of polymers, processing and rheology and polymer nanocomposites. Expertise in biopolymers and biomaterials includes hydrogels, scaffold material for tissue regeneration, encapsulation of bioactive materials and biobased / biodegradable polymers.
Our research combines industrial focus with a commitment to understand the underlying research problems from a fundamental physicochemical perspective. The complementary research interests provide the opportunity to develop not only leading-edge polymeric materials, but also the associated manufacturing processes for efficient and robust production of those materials.
